Begin the process by taking a tote bag and cutting a circular hole on its side. You do not need to cut a large hole since a cat can fit through any space provided that the diameter is bigger than their whiskers. Next, get a separate piece of wool and secure it over the hole you created. This will act as a door and help shut out the wind. To insulate the container, line the interior of the tote with Styrofoam. You will have to cut up the Styrofoam to make sure it will fit and then glue its pieces to the tote.
As for the shelter’s bedding, you can use anything around the house as long as it does not smell too much like people since this could frighten skittish cats. Some great choices are straw, hay, and similar materials. Place the shelter in a location where the cat can be protected from the wind, rain, and snow. For instance, if you know that the wind comes from the north, then you need to set the entrance to face south. Finally, set out some food near the shelter so you can be sure that the cats would not have to starve during winter.
